WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden is in line to become the chairman of the Senate's most powerful committee, the Finance Committee.

The liberal Oregonian has been an occasional thorn in the side of the intelligence community, the Obama administration and fellow Democrats.

President Barack Obama said Friday he intends to nominate the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Montana's Max Baucus, as U.S. ambassador to China.

Wyden is the panel's third most-senior Democrat, but he is likely to move to the top spot after West Virginia's Jay Rockefeller indicated he won't seek the chairmanship.

The Finance Committee has jurisdiction over taxes, trade and health care.
