NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council has paved the way for a ban on the use of plastic foam containers and added electronic cigarettes to its already stringent public smoking bans in a flurry of votes on its final day in session.
The council passed 26 introductions or resolutions Thursday — a record number of legislation on a single day in city council history.
The chamber voted 43 to 8 to amend the city's Smoke-Free Air Act to prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in areas where smoking's already not allowed. It also voted unanimously to begin a yearlong inquiry to see whether plastic foam containers can be effectively recycled. If not, the council will move to ban the material.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to sign the legislation before he leaves office Dec. 31.
