CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — The motto of Rhode Island's most distressed municipality — "A City With a Bright Future" — just got new meaning.
At least that's what officials are saying a day after the mayor of Central Falls resigned and agreed to plead guilty to a federal corruption charge. Charles Moreau's (mer-OH') plea agreement comes the same month a federal judge approved a fiscal recovery plan for the city that paves the way for its exit from municipal bankruptcy.
Lifelong resident Leo Dufresne (doo-FRAIN') says Moreau's resignation is good for Rhode Island's smallest city. He says a state-appointed receiver has gotten its finances in order.
The state took over Central Falls in 2010. The receiver filed for bankruptcy last year.
A special election will be held for mayor.
