WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of a U.S. House intelligence panel says two major Chinese technology companies have so far failed to address its concerns that they could be used to spy against America.
Republican Congressman Mike Rogers says Huawei Technologies Ltd. and its rival ZTE Corp have refused to turn over corporate documents on the grounds it would potentially violate China's state secrecy laws.
The two companies are among the world's largest providers of telcommunications gear and are seeking greater access to the U.S. market. Rogers said they could provide a wealth of opportunities to Chinese intelligence agencies.
Senior executives of both Chinese firms are testifying Thursday before the panel. They deny being a security threat and say the allegations are unsubstantiated.
The committee is expected to finalize its investigation in early October.
