Bridge City AD apologizes for racial meme against WOS player, promises investigation

The mother of the WO-S football player targeted in a racially charged meme says her family is hurt and disappointed.

The Athletic Director and Head Coach of the Bridge City High School football team issued a public apology over social media after a meme showing a picture of a black West Orange-Stark player with a racially offensive comment surfaced Wednesday.

The meme said "You will always be a n*****"

The West Orange-Stark player the meme was directed at tweeted about it Wednesday evening saying...

"All respect has been lost for BC. That's disrespectful on all levels, I understand talking about the game but it's gone personal."

DeWayne Dubose, head coach and athletic director at Bridge CIty High School, issued the apology to the public and West Orange-Stark specifically Thursday morning. His team is playing the Mustangs Friday night in Bridge City.

The West Orange-Cove CISD  released a statement on their Facebook page saying that they were in communication with the Bridge City ISD officials and that they appreciated the apology.

They also stated that they believe the comments to be isolated and not a representation of Bridge City ISD or the area.

Dubose' statement included a promise to investigate and punish "every single culprit" with "severe consequences."

He apologized to the player, coach, fans and the entire community,

"What was created is highly offensive," he wrote. "It absolutely does not represent what Bridge City ISD, Bridge City Athletics nor the community of Bridge City."

Statement from Bridge City ISD Superintendent Todd Lintzen...

A Bridge City ISD student posted an inappropriate message last night on social media.

I have the utmost respect for the West Orange Cove Administration with the manner in which they have handled this difficult situation.

The Professionalism demonstrated through their actions, statements, and willingness to work with our school district during this difficult time is commendable.

Their students, staff, and community are also to be commended for their poise during an extremely adverse situation created by a member of our school district.

The inappropriate act by this student is not a true reflection of the Bridge City students, staff, school district, and community.

I support the swift action by our Campus Administration and District Athletic Director to address the situation with the individual student, football team, and student body.

On behalf of our school district, I sincerely apologize to the West Orange Cove Consolidated Independent School District students, school district, and community.
