PORTLAND -- A water main break on West Burnside Street and 4th Avenue has shut down the eastbound lanes of the arterial road for most of Tuesday, according to city officials.
Westbound was reduced to one lane. Northbound trafic on Southwqest 4th Avenue was detoured at Southwest Ankeny Street.
TriMet bus lines 12, 19 and 20 were detoured around the site.
The water bureau expects repaits to continue throughout the day, city officials said.
The break was first reported about 12:45 a.m. by Portland police.
Water from the break created pools nearly a foot deep along several streets, with water gushing over curbs. Mud covered the roadway. At least one area business, Embassy Suites, had basement water damage.
The two-foot pipe that failed dates back nearly a century.
