SEATTLE – Washington state is home to the biggest tech and Internet companies around, from Microsoft to Amazon.com. But, a new report says Washington is the fifth-slowest state when it comes to Internet speed, even though five of its cities have the fastest average connection speeds in the country.

Akamai Techonologies released its "State of the Internet" report for the first quarter of 2010. Among other things, it looks at broadband and narrowband connection usage.

According to Akamai Industries, 6.6 percent of Washingtonians use narrowband connections (speeds below 256 Kbps). That puts the Evergreen State fifth in the country for narrowband connectivity. While Akamai says Washington's narrowband usage has dropped nine percent in the first quarter, it was still up 116 percent over the same period last year.

In contrast, the report says five cities in Washington – Federal Way, Everett, Olympia, Bellevue and Vancouver – are among the top ten in the country for average maximum connection speeds. All of them averaged over 24,000 Kbps for the first quarter. Salem, Ore. is also in the top 10.

Here are the ten states with the most narrowband connectivity:

  1. Alaska
  2. New Jersey
  3. District of Columbia
  4. Georgia
  5. Washington
  6. Missouri
  7. Illinois
  8. Iowa
  9. Texas
  10. Ohio

And here are the cities with the fastest average connection speeds:

  1. Monterey Park, Calif.
  2. Federal Way, Wash.
  3. Everett, Wash.
  4. Olympia, Wash.
  5. Bellevue, Wash.
  6. Vancouver, Wash.
  7. Salem, Ore.
  8. Hickory, N.C.
  9. Boston Metro, Mass.
  10. Fairfield, Calif.

This is exactly why we need President Obama's plan to get more broadband into the rural areas. It is a stimulus to the economy, and it will bring more people to the internet.

Anyone using CenturyTel is getting ripped off! My parents are paying $30 a month and Centurytel is trying to tell them its the age of the PC. I took my brand new i7 64 bit X58 chipset Marvel GigLAN, N-Wireless monster out there after speed qualifying it here on my network and showing sustained throughput nearing 600 mb to my HA SAN, 100 MB bust, 80mg sustained to my SAS servers, 15mg up and 6mg down on Comcast home . With there tech onsite, and in control, we were at best able to get there system to give 24K a second sustained down and 14K out. The line into the house is all Cat5E wired by me (*hint I build test labs for a living) tested with my Fluke DTX-1800 showing all line perfect - < .0078 ping and 0 latency on all lines at 400 MHz. so it qualifies at near Cat6 Gig Speed. There systems are broken and a pure and simple rip off.

I really like the info you provided, now we in the low frequency areas can sue the companies who are fraudulantly taking our money for the high speed internet that they are not providing. All companies who are selling the highspeed internet services in low areas should be asking what areas their customers live in and state it will not work to increase the speed. You will remain low until someone gets the system changed for everyone not just the few because of companies like Qwest who have control over all the other phone services and will not allow them access so everyone can have the same service and not be fraudulantly taking money from us.
