SNOQUALMIE, Wash. – People came from all over the Snoqualmie Valley, lining the street outside Mount Si High School and waving flags in honor Lance Corporal Eric Ward, who was killed in the line of duty.
Some knew him, but many, like World War Two Veteran Bob Hamerly, did not.
"He was a local boy, and I've been here about 80 years myself so it's in appreciation for his sacrifice," said Hamerly.
The 19-year-old was one of them. He grew up in the Snoqualmie Valley and graduated from Mount Si High.
"It's hard, it's really hard because no one should have their life cut short, especially him, he was such a great kid," said Brielle Buhner.
During the memorial, family and friends recalled a young man with a beautiful smile who loved life, sports and those around him.
The traditional Marine ceremony displayed combat boots and helmet, with dog tags hanging from a rifle.
During his short time as a Marine, a-year-and-a-half of service, Ward made lifelong friends. Like Trey Hoover, who bunked next to him during training.
"He was family. This is the second close friend to pass and it's just getting harder, I mean I went through a lot of struggles with him, good times and bad times with him, it's just really hard," he said.
Lance Corporal Ward served in southern Afghanistan. The Defense Department reports he was killed during a "hostile incident."
Those who knew him say Ward always wanted to be a Marine and was proud to defend his country. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
