A California man appears in federal court in Seattle Monday charged with trying to provide support to al-Qaida's efforts in Syria.

Federal prosecutors say Nicholas Teausant, 20, was attempting to get into Canada at the Blaine border crossing, where he was arrested. They say he planned to travel to Syria to join the organization, which is formally called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Prosecutors did not immediately detail what led them to make the arrest.

Teausant was in the process of being released from the U.S. Army National Guard.

If convicted, Teausant faces 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
