SEATTLE - Fad diets and supplements can cloud the world of good nutrition for anyone. And if you're a teenage athlete, choosing the right foods can be even more confusing. A new program promises to help.

Athletes at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle admit maneuvering the nutrition maze can be a bit confusing. Sports dietitian Emily Edison is focusing on high school athletes through the upcoming Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum Clinic or WINForum.  There, she'll unveil a new sports nutrition game plan for student athletes.

She'll set the record straight on some major misnomers, including the fact that protein is not king of the food pyramid.

"And it's not protein – it's carbohydrates.  Athletes need a high carbohydrate diet in order to perform at their best," she said.

And if you're a teenage athlete, Edison wants you to steer clear of diets and supplements.

"Any of the potions and powders that tout you're going to be this extreme athlete and that you're going to be 100 million percent better by taking their particular supplement," said Edison.

The WINForum clinic is open to the public Wednesday Oct. 28 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Conibear Shell House on the Univeristy of Washington campus. The $5 charge includes a nutritious lunch, and if you bring a friend, you can get in free.

If you can't make it, you can download the sports nutrition game plan online.
