In Seattle there are dozens of construction sites, with traffic stopped or stalled, at every turn.
Nobody could envision that growth would be so frustrating. Not even the mayor.
"I’m mayor of the city. I’m pretty well informed about what's happening. I can’t tell you the number of times I find myself stuck in a construction thing because of traffic. We can do better,” said Mayor Ed Murray.
To do better? A war room. The mayor says he's in the early stages of developing a system to get out real-time information on alternative routes at construction sites.
"We can get that info out using technology and social media and give people alternative routes. We really don’t do that well,” he said.
The Denny Triangle is the newest neighborhood under construction for Amazon between Denny, Westlake and 5th.
A 2012 city study on the project impacts gives multiple intersections here an "F."
Amazon's adding another street car but the company may be asked to contribute more.
"It’s a combination of both city and company. Amazon is putting in improvements to that whole system of streets in and around their project,” said Tom Rasmussen, Seattle City Council
Currently, Seattle does not require impact fees from developers to mitigate traffic.
It’s an option some city leaders will look at to solve construction gridlock.
