SPD officer accused of molestation appears in court

The Seattle Police officer accused of molesting the daughter of a former girlfriend appeared in court Tuesday. Bail was set at $150,000.

Officer Eric A. Smith is being held on investigation of first-degree child molestation and communication with a minor for immoral purposes. He has not yet been charged.

“The defendant is a danger to the community, he an untreated sex offender.  This was going on for several years from when the victim was 7 to 11,” Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Kathy Jo Blake said in court.

Smith's attorney argued for a lower bail than what the prosecutor recommends, saying Smith would surrender his passport and not contact the victim's family.

Court documents say the girl, now 12, disclosed the abuse to her teacher after a health class and further disclosed the abuse to her school principal.

The girl said she was molested was between the ages of 7 and 11 while Smith was dating her mother.

According to the documents, the girl had made the initial disclosure to her mother was when she was 7. She recanted when the suspect confronted her in front of her mother and the girl was subsequently punished, documents say.

Earlier this month, document say, the girl was in health class at school when the subject of inappropriate touching came up and she told her teacher about the molestation.

Documents say the girl was interviewed by a Child Interview Specialist, where she provided graphic details of being molested by Smith.

Documents say the girl had confided in her best friend, who has since moved away. Police contacted the friend, who confirmed that the girl had told her about the abuse.

The girl’s mother was interviewed and she confirmed that her daughter had told her about the abuse on three separate occasions.

Smith is on paid administrative leave from the Seattle Police Department. Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole said if Smith is charged, she will considering changing that to unpaid leave.
