What began as a rivalry and a billboard has led to something much bigger and more meaningful to Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers fans.

The two groups have been competing to see who can raise the most money for Seattle Children’s Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco.

Both the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks are matching donations to benefit Seattle Children’s and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.

The 49ers are matching up to $100,000 and the Seahawks are matching up to $112,000.

“It’s really incredible,” said Seahawks fan Christopher Hart of Bremerton, who spearheaded the effort to raise money for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco. “It feels good.”

“With matches, we are projecting we've raised over $329,000,” Hart said Sunday on the Go Fund Me page.

It all started when a group of 49ers fans, led by Aasheesh Shravah, raised enough money to purchase a billboard in the Seattle area (actually Fife), poking fun at the Seahawks, who have not (yet) won a Super Bowl. The group needed $7,000 for the billboard; any extra donations they pledged to a Seattle-based charity and 49ers fans chose Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation as their charity of choice.

A Seahawks fan then stepped up to do same thing in San Francisco.
