While the 8k road race benefitting the Pat Tillman Foundation was winding its way through a San Jose neighborhood, runners saw 95-year-old World War II veteran Joe Bell watching the event while dressed in full uniform. That’s when a number of competitors made a beeline for the veteran to offer their thanks, making for an impromptu receiving line.
The touching scene was captured by Julia Prodis Sulek of the San Jose Mercury News.
Tillman grew up in San Jose before starring at Arizona State and with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. In 2002, he was killed in action while deployed in Afghanistan. The eight-kilometer race benefits his foundation, which offers educational opportunities to veterans and their families.
