BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- Friday kicks off a weekend long crack down on Washington waterways. More patrols will be on the water this weekend as part of a national effort called "Operation Dry Water."
Local police say boating and drinking is a serious problem. In the past decade, at least 64 people have died in Washington from boating accidents involving alcohol, according to the Washington State Parks Boating Program.
Last year, 169 marine law enforcement officers in Washington took part in "Operation Dry Water." During the campaign, officers stopped 3,908 recreational boaters and issued 1,364 boating safety warnings, 6 BUI citations and 219 citations for other violations.
