SEATTLE -- The end of summer is near and many of you will be taking off for the Labor Day weekend.
AAA says more people will be traveling this holiday, up 10 percent from last Labor Day weekend. More than 34 million Americans plan to fly or drive this weekend.
At a couple of gas stations near Seattle's Northgate Mall, a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.99. Even though drivers in our state are paying about 10 cents more for gas than last year, AAA expects more people will be traveling this Labor Day weekend - and further.
At last check, in urban Seattle drivers are paying about $3.04 gallon for regular unleaded, down a penny from Thursday. Tacoma's average is about $2.96. The national average for regular gas is $2.68 per gallon.
AAA gave some advice to drivers on when to hit the road.
"The best time to travel is when less people are on the road. So if you head out early mornings or midday when folks are still at work today, but basically off-peak times," said Jennifer Cook, AAA spokesperson.
AAA says the increase in travel is the result of economic improvement since the recession and lower gas prices.
Also, just a reminder that Washington State Patrol will be out with more troopers checking for speeding, aggressive driving and drunk driving.
