LONG BEACH, Wash. -- A nine-year-old girl is missing in the water off Long Beach according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The girl began struggling in the water, along with her brother, around 2 p.m., authorities said.  The boy is 11-years-old, according to the Coast Guard.

Rescuers were able to save the boy but the girl vanished under water, according to witnesses. Crews were searching for her by boat and from a Coast Guard helicopter.

According to The Daily Astorian, the boy was in the water for more than 30 minutes before he was rescued.  When asked if he knew where his sister was, the stunned boy told rescuers "I don't know."

He was taken to Ocean Beach Hospital for treatment. His mother rode with him to the hospital.  The family was reportedly from the Seattle area, according to the Chinook Observer.

Names have not yet been released.
