A Lewis County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested for DUI and is now on administrative leave.
Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield said in a statement that Deputy Christopher P. Fulton was stopped by the Washington State Patrol just before 1 a.m. Saturday on I-5 in Chehalis. He was off-duty and driving his own vehicle.
For unknown reasons, troopers did not book Fulton into the Lewis County Jail, said Mansfield.
Fulton was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
"I am extremely embarrassed, upset, and disappointed,” said Mansfield. “This community depends on our deputies to protect them, keep them from harm, and uphold the law. Impaired drivers are one of the biggest threats to people in our community. My commitment is to aggressively remove impaired drivers from our roadways. I will not tolerate this type of performance from my employees either on or off duty. After my internal investigation is complete, I will provide a full account of the incident to the people we serve."
