SPOKANE -- Laughter from stories about the former Gonzaga basketball coach affectionately known as "Fitz" filled the room at his memorial service Wednesday.
It was standing room only in the Pend Oreille Pavillion at Airway Heights Casino for Dan Fitzgerald's memorial service, where hundreds of family members, former players, and people he worked with gathered to honor his life and achievements.
"He had a mind for basketball, but a heart for people," said Fitzgerald's nephew, Ryan Fitzgerald.
Several speakers joked about Fitz's mannerisms, swearing, and toughness, but expressed his dedication, respect, and how loved he was by everyone he encountered.
"His legacy lies in knowledge that every place he worked, he left it in better shape," said Ryan.
Fitzgerald was known as the fiery leader of the Gonzaga men's basketball team in the 80's and 90's. He later became the community relations director for Northern Quest Casino.
Fitzgerald died last Tuesday in Spokane from an apparent heart attack at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife Darleen and their daughter Kelly.
