Explosions could be felt in all directions when an early morning fire exploded at a Belfair wrecking yard Monday.
Two people were firing rifles for target practice at Belfair Truck & Auto Wrecking near the 11000 block of State Route 3. Their shots hit a storage unit containing several commercial grade fireworks, causing several mortars to ignite and setting off multiple explosions, according to firefighters.
Some of the fireworks hit junk cars, also catching them on fire.
“Our fire station is not too far away and our firefighters actually felt it at the station,” said Mason County Fire District 2 Fire Chief Beau Bakken. “We got numerous calls about what ended up taking place.”
A heavy duty excavator was needed to clear debris and tires so firefighters could get to the flames.
“We had hot spots in piles of tires and car parts,” says Bakken. “It made this a tough fire to fight.”
No one was hurt in the fire. The two men are cooperating with authorities.
Fire officials says the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will be investigating because the fire involves commercial fireworks.
It’s still not known who owns the fireworks or whether they were involved in any Fourth of July shows.
