SEATTLE  -- The King County Sheriff's Marine Unit can now impound the vessels of boaters suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The county council unanimously approved a new law this week giving the sheriff's office the new authority.

Sheriff John Urquhart says the new law gives Marine Unit another tool to hold boaters accountable.

The King County Sheriff's Marine Unit patrols the waters of Lake Washington, Lake Sammamish, the Puget Sound and many other rives and small lakes.

The new law also gives the unit the authority to impound drifting or unattended vessels.
