SEATTLE – AAA projects Memorial Day travel volumes could reach a new post-recession high. More than 36 million Americans are expected getaway this weekend as the summer travel season kicks off.
Nearly nine of out 10 travelers will drive to their destinations this weekend, according to AAA.
Gas prices should not slow travelers down either. Prices are slightly lower than a year ago. In Washington, the average price is $3.89 per gallon for regular, up 11 cents in the past month, but still seven cents lower than a year ago.
On a tank of gas from the Seattle area, Travelzoo.com says the one of the best deals can be found in Portland. For example, River's Edge Hotel and Spa is $179 a night over Memorial Day weekend, and offers breakfast, valet parking and upgrades.
Pinnacle Lodge in Sun Peaks B.C. is $140 for a 2 night stay.
Plus, Travelzoo.com found deals on flyboarding lessons on Lake Washington for half off, $99 versus $206 with AV Water Sports. Or you could try grilling classes through Seattle BBQ and Grilling School for $79 per person.
Another option: Great deals on fishing and crabbing trips off the San Juan Islands with Outer Island Expeditions starting at $119 per person.
