US 2 was closed two miles west of Index Saturday afternoon after power lines went down on the road.
The Washington State Patrol said at 4:47 p.m., something, perhaps a tree branch, sliced the lines in half and the live lines started a smoldering brush fire two miles east of Index-Galena Rd (MP 42).
A PUD crew from Seattle was called to the area and the road was shut down. Traffic quickly backed up.
When PUD arrived, they discovered they couldn't handle the high power lines so Puget Sound Energy was called.
At 7:25, the Department of Transportation reported that traffic was alternating.
The road was reopened early Sunday.
No injuries were reported.
