Five people are receiving help from the Red Cross after a Sunday morning apartment fire.

The Seattle Fire Department said one dog died and three made it out of the fire in the apartment building at 3939 15th Ave. S.

The fire is reported to have affected three households.

Laura Maldonado said she just moved up from California to get a new start. She lost everything in the fire.

“I know in the world there’s good people, then maybe they can help us,” she said. “I’m glad that I have my life and my friend’s life. I lose everything but I have my life.”

Investigators said the fire was caused by improper use of extension cords. The fire caused $240,000 worth of damage.
