Dom Cooks, a senior at Decatur High School in Federal Way, passed away Tuesday after battling a terminal brain tumor. This came on the same week as he became a finalist for the 2014 Army National Guard Most Inspirational Athlete, which is a fan-driven contest.

Cooks played basketball and football before the tumor took him off the field. Cooks always stayed optimistic and showed up at games to cheer on his team.

He was named homecoming king last fall and was allowed to score a ceremonial touchdown.

A special graduation ceremony was held for Cooks at Decatur in February because doctors were not sure if he would make it to graduate with the rest of his class in June.

Cooks has made it through the first two rounds of voting and is now in the Top 10 of the Most Inspirational Athlete contest. Dom almost did not make it into the finals, but a spokesperson for the Federal Way School District said another contestant withdrew because he was inspired by Cooks' story and wanted him to advance.

The final round started Thursday and goes through April 14, with voting available online.

The winner of the award will get a feature article on them published on USA TODAY High School Sports, a trophy that will be presented at his school and a $1,000 to the school’s athletic department.
