BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Bellevue, Kirkland, Seattle and hundreds of other cities across the country are competing to get in on a Google offer.
Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more communities in the United States. The experimental Google network will reach 500,000 homes with one gigabit per second fiber optic service. That's more than a hundred times faster than what most American's have access to today.
"There's no denying that Kirkland has a need for this kind of speed," said Kirkland Mayor Joan McBride.
Google won't say how many communities have put in bids for the project. The deadline for cities to apply is March 26th. Google will announce the winner by the end of this year.
