PORTLAND -- A black bear was safely removed from a Portland neighborhood after being tranquilized.

Police were called to the area of NE 38th and Jessup for a report of a bear that broke through some neighborhood fences. The bear was described as about 5 foot.

Police surrounded a bear in a one-block area around Northeast 35th Avenue and Killingsworth Street, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson. The bear was hit with a tranquilizer dart shortly after 6 a.m. and the Portland Fire Bureau summoned to raise a ladder to the creature dozing halfway up a tall tree.

Staff with the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife removed the bear in a cart shortly before 8:30 a.m.
