Women respond to Santa Barbara shooter on #YesAllWomen

PORTLAND – A Twitter hashtag that emerged in reaction to the misogynist writing of the Santa Barbara shooter was trending in the Portland metro area Monday.

Women in Portland and around the world have been sharing their experiences of harassment, abuse and discrimination on the hashtag #YesAllWomen. The feed cropped up Saturday evening after details emerge of the misogynistic and nihilistic thoughts that motivated Elliot Rodger, 22, who murdered six and wounded 13, before taking his own near UC Santa Barbara.

A Youtube video and manifest of over 100 pages revealed the thoughts of an isolated, psychotic young man fixated on being rejected by women.

"You girls have never been attracted to me," Rodger said. "I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me but I will punish you all for it."

Women posting at #YesAllWoman have reflected on what they believe is an atmosphere of intimidation they feel when around men and what they say are cultural norms that embolden men to abuse, harass or otherwise take advantage of women.
