PORTLAND -- A Portland police officer has been shot and a suspect with a rifle remains on the loose in the Capitol Highway, Taylors Ferry area of Southwest Portland.

The officer suffered non life threatening injuries said police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Police have cordoned off about four blocks in either direction from Capitol Highway to Primrose Street to 41st Avenue.

The incident may have started with a traffic stop. The man may be armed with an AR-15 rifle.

Police used the 911 system to notify neighbors to stay in their homes and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

Motorists should avoid the area and use Barbur Boulevard or 45th for detours.
