OREGON CITY, Ore. -- A man returned an envelope containing $40,000 to a 71-year-old woman Friday, after she lost the money in a Clackamas Safeway parking lot.

On Jan. 10, Sharon Davis, of Portland, was carrying $2,000 in cash and a $38,000 cashier's check in an envelope for a pending home purchase. She told police she stopped at the Safeway store at Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Sunnyside Road, got a cup of coffee and then noticed her envelope was missing.

Davis was unaware she'd dropped money in the parking lot, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

"She immediately began searching the area and frantically asking local shops if anyone had turned in the envelope," said Lt. Robert Wurpses of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Brian Dicarlo found the envelope, saw the cash and called 911. He turned envelope and its contents over to a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Deputies were able to identify the owner based on paperwork in the envelope and returned the money to Davis while she was still searching the parking lot.

"I can't believe my good fortune," said Davis. "What a good and amazing man."
