VANCOUVER, Wash. – A woman died when a home went up in flames in Vancouver Friday morning. The woman's son reportedly tried to break into the home with an ax to save his mother, neighbors told KGW.
The fire broke out around 10 a.m. in the 15200 block of Northeast 74th Street. Dozens of firefighters responded to the home after a second alarm was called. Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away.
The woman, who was in her 40s, had returned home after having surgery on her arm. Rescuers pulled her from the home but she died at the scene, neighbors told KGW.
The fire reportedly started in the kitchen and got out of control.
