KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- A commercial truck driver and his dog were able to escape without serious injury after a semi-truck crashed into an ice-covered Oregon lake Tuesday morning, police said.

The driver, 73-year-old Carl Hansen of Medford, was headed eastbound on Highway 140W about 6 miles west of Klamath Falls when the semi went off the roadway and into Upper Klamath Lake just before 7 a.m., according to Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

"The truck and trailer broke through ice, coming to rest partially submerged in the water," Hastings said.

Hansen was able to climb through the passenger window and crawl across the ice to an embankment, Hastings said. Emergency crews arrived and took Hansen by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Rescuers spotted his dog running on the ice nearby and brought it back to land.

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the crash.
