BREAKING: David Pietz has been found guilty. We are working to update our story.
--- Original story ---
Seven years after the murder of Nicole Pietz, a King County jury has decided the fate of her husband, David.
Jurors in the David Pietz trial reached a verdict Monday during the second day of deliberations. That verdict was expected to be shared at any moment.
Nicole Pietz’s body was found dumped in a wooded area of Burien in 2006. Her husband was the prime suspect from day one, but police had no direct evidence tying him to the crime and spent six years building their case.
David Pietz has always maintained his innocence, saying he and Nicole went to bed together and when he woke up she was gone. The prosecution built its case against his character, pointing out his lies and saying he was a partygoer who wanted out of the marriage because Nicole wasn’t wilder.
Pietz told different stories about the night of his wife's disappearance to different people and didn’t actively help in the search for her body. He also refused to testify in his own defense.
The defense pointed to Nicole’s past as a prescription drug addict who may have relapsed. They said she had been prescribed hundreds of painkillers for a back problem; however, the medical examiner only found a trace in her system.
All of the evidence against David Pietz is circumstantial, but prosecutors say his abuse history and lack of action after his wife’s alleged “disappearance” provide a motive.
