HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- One man died and three were hurt while jumping into Punchbowl Falls in the Columbia Gorge, according to the Hood River County sheriff's office.
The dead man was identified Monday morning as Jason Endicott, 25, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
One of the injured men had to be rescued by rope crews, said Sgt. Pete Hughes. He was treated in an ambulance for hypothermia and released. The other two men had minor injuries. Their names were not available.
The sheriff's office said all were visiting from another state and had traveled to the falls.
A hiker told KGW that he was with friends when two survivors came running down the Eagle Falls trail yelling for help.
Recovery efforts for the body started Monday morning. A sign at the trail head warns that cliff jumping into the pool is illegal and may result in a $300 fine.
KGW meteorologist Nick Allard estimated that the water temperature was between 40 and 45 degrees.
