HOOD RIVER -- One man died and three were hurt while jumping into Punchbowl Falls in the Columbia Gorge, according to the Hood River County sheriff's office.
One of the injured had to be rescue by rope crews, said Sgt. Pete Hughes. He was treated in an ambulance for hypothermia and released.
The other two men had minor injuries. A fifth man did not jump. Their names were not available.
A hiker told KGW that he was with friends when two survivors came running down the Eagle Falls trail yelling for help.
Recovery efforts for the body were expected to start later Monday morning. Signs at the falls post warnings that jumping into the falls or pool is illegal.
KGW meteorologist Nick Allard estimated that the water temperature was between 40 to 45 degrees.
