SALEM – A new proposed law would make riding a bicycle without a helmet punishable by a $25 fine for anyone 18 years old or under.

Senate Bill 742 proposed by Eugene Democrat Chris Edwards would require anyone under 18 years of age to wear protective headgear riding on a bicycle, skateboard, or scooter. It would also require that people under 18 wear a helmet while using in-line skates or roller skates, on public or private land in Oregon.

The law would not include tricycles designed to be ridden by children.
