SPOKANE VALLEY -- Two people were killed in a wreck Tuesday night when a car crashed head on into a tree.

It happened around 7:00 p.m. near Locust and Broadway.

The driver was allegedly speeding when the driver of the Corvette lost control and crossed the center line. He drove into a yard and crashed into a telephone pole before slamming into the tree.

“I heard a loud bang, and I looked down there and saw basically shrapnel coming down the street. My oldest son rand down there and yelled over to me to call 911,” David Scott, a neighbor, said.

Investigators said speed and alcohol likely contributed to the fatal crash. Police reportedly found open alcohol containers in the car. Neither the man nor the woman were wearing seatbelts. Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pry them from the car.

No one else was hurt.
