CRATER LAKE, Ore. -- An Oregon couple says they are amazed their beloved dog survived a terrifying car crash.
The Ashland watched as their car and dog Haley, an Akita mix, plunged off a 1,100-ft. cliff at Crater Lake National Park last week.
Shauna McHugh and Tobias Swanson were enjoying the view Saturday night from the North Junction Scenic Overlook when their car rolled off the only open area without a barrier.
The driver apparently didn't set the emergency brake and the car rolled backward from the parking area and over the rim.
"She went over half way down spinning and flipping and finally the door just exploded out and we see her get launched. It was the most helpless feeling in the world," said McHugh.
"A human being would have never survived it," said Swanson.
Haley escaped through the car's sunroof early in the descent and was able to climb out.
Once the car settled into the water, the couple saw Haley come out of the wreckage and start charging up the hillside. She didn't break any bones and suffered only minor injuries.
The car had earlier been reported as a 1993 model. Officials say efforts to remove the wreckage will be a challenge.
