What 1 in 5 teens do at high school
Do you know what your teen is doing on a Friday or Saturday night? What about during the school day?
You may think you know, but a new report out of Washington State finds one out of every five high school seniors admits to being drunk or high in school over the past year. Unbelievable isn't it? The study, by the Department of Social and Health Services, also found one out of every eight high school seniors used prescription pain killers to get high in the past month. And many times, they're getting those prescription drugs out of your medicine cabinet.
And it's not just teens. Younger kids are experimenting with drugs and alcohol too. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse, 30% of kids have experimented with drinking by age 13, mostly because of peer pressure. Experts say young people who start drinking before 13 are likely to binge drink and are at greatest risk for alcohol poisoning, addiction, and injuries.
What do I say when...
The statistics seem to stack up against parents dont they? But you have to be proactive. The key is to start talking early. And if you need some help figuring out what to say, the web site Starttalkingnow.org is a great place for parents. There's a section called "What do I say?" For instance, how do you respond when your kids says, "But mom, everyone does it." Or "You drink dad. What's the big deal?" Check out their website for answers to these and other common questions.
Breast milk cheese
If you have an overflow of breast milk in your freezer why not make cheese? A chef in New York City turned his fiance's extra milk into a fine fromage. Check out his blog for the recipe. A note here, it's not for public consumption.
