Young giraffe at Zoo Boise dies

BOISE A four-year-old giraffe at Zoo Boise died Monday morning.

Joseph was one of two giraffes featured at the African Plains exhibit. He had been in Boise for about two years, and came to Zoo Boise from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Zoo Boise Director Steve Burns said they aren t sure why Joseph died, but a necropsy, which is an autopsy for animals, is being performed at the University of Idaho s Caine Veterinary Teaching Center in Caldwell.

The results from the necropsy are expected later this week.

This isn t the first time a giraffe has died since the African Plains exhibit opened.

In November of 2008, the zoo lost one of its new giraffes, Shingo.

Shingo had been at the zoo for just seven weeks before he suffered what zoo officials called a short, but severe illness.

When Shingo died, Joseph was at the zoo for a few months by himself, until Julius was brought to Boise.

Julius is still alive, and can be seen at the African Plains exhibit.
