MORTON, Wash. - A small plane with two people - a man and a woman - on board crashed Friday at about 7:15 p.m. in the front yard of a house near Morton on Highway 508, southwest of Mount Rainier.
The male pilot was killed, and the female passenger was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition. Neither was immediately identified.
The plane, a single-engine Cirrus SR22, clipped some trees and damaged the fence at the home.
Witnesses say they believe the plane flew in from the west, before making what one witness described as a 3 to 4-foot deep crater in the ground. Bob Thomas said the pilot looked in bad shape and the woman was hurt, but conscious and yelling. She was airlifted to Harborview medical center.
No one on the ground was hurt.
The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.
The plane is Cirrus SR-22, which is a small 4-seater propeller plane. The plane is registered to Washtucna Aviation LLC in Bellevue, Wash.
