EVERETT, Wash. - A 23-year-old Lynnwood-area man was apprehended after a massive manhunt shut down Interstate 5 in both directions Wednesday evening.
Police activity on I-5 in South Everett disrupted traffic in both directions. All lanes were blocked on Interstate 5 between 75th Street SE and 41st Street SE while police went on a massive manhunt.
Wednesday at about 6 p.m., deputies spotted a vehicle believed to have been stolen - a black Volkswagen Jetta - in the south Snohomish County area and initiated a pursuit. At some point, the suspect fired shots at deputies, striking one deputy's patrol vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The pursuit continued north on I-5, resulting in a rollover crash involving a van that was not part of the pursuit. The 49-year-old female driver of that van suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in that crash.
After crashing his car into a guardrail, the suspect got out of his vehicle on I-5 in Everett and fled on foot, gun in hand.
Officers and deputies were out with K-9 units searching for the armed suspect. Police warned residents with megaphones in the neighborhood to stay inside their homes.
Police shut down the freeway in both directions while police were searching for the suspect.
The suspect was caught just before 8 p.m. in the 7100 block of Olympic Drive in Everett. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with bite wounds from the K-9 search dog who took him down.
The suspect, who had DOC warrants for his arrest, will be booked on assault and vehicular assault charges.
A woman was in the car with the suspect during the pursuit and crash. She was not injured. She has not been arrested.
It turned out, the suspect vehicle was not stolen, but its plates had been canceled.
