BELLEVUE, Wash. - The view is what Nick Bean loved the most about his Bellevue office. It's perched across the street from Crossroads Park and is less than a mile from his house.

That was until a new neighbor moved in.

"This is a family oriented neighborhood," said Bean, "And this [stand] just doesn't fit."

Bean is talking about the new "Knotty Bodies" espresso stand that opened Saturday on the Chevron lot at the corner of 8th Street and 163rd. It sits in between the park, a daycare center and a residential neighborhood.

"It was nice to see the coffee house kind of be renovated," said neighbor Bethann Joyner. "But once I saw the sign go up I could tell what it was all about and it was really disappointing."

Some residents have decided to take their disappointment to Monday night's city council meeting.

"I can't imagine what the city of Bellevue was thinking," said Crossroads resident Carol Walker.

Knotty Bodies barista Autumn Novaria says they have the right permits and the right to be there.

"We try to keep it not as risque here, there's no pasties or anything like that and we didn't put a window there in the back because of the park," she said.

"It just think it's inappropriate," said Joyner.

Oh my gosh, I am so tired of all the uptight people, dude, there is way more nudity on TV then at places like this. Really, are you so unhappy with yourselves that you can't handle someone in a bikini? Get a life people!

libretarian said on November 22, 2009 at 6:30 PM

"I can't imagine what the city of Bellevue was thinking," I can't either, WTF do they think this is? You'd like to think this was America, the land of the free or something... Oh, wait, It still is. Well, at least until these people get their way.

bekster4 said on November 22, 2009 at 6:52 PM

America..... land of the free home of the trashey coffee stands. I have a favorite coffee stand where the girls all wear clothes. Stopped there one morning the line was so long I couldnt wait. Went accross the street the little girl greeted me with hardly anything on. I excused myself and just told her I did'nt agree with the atire went back accross the street where the line was even longer and just waited. The whole time I was in line the little gal accross the street never got one customer. If you dont agree dont stop, change the channel if you dont like what you see. It does however make one wonder why they have to dress (or undress) in that kind of atire.............. to get business, or to get laid!

factoid said on November 22, 2009 at 7:18 PM

The market will determine if they succeed as bekster4 proved. We do not need the Government nannies stepping in to protect us.That being said, I would not want my daughter working there, but I also realize they are wearing the same attire as they would at the beach or pool. So should we ban them from the beach and pool also. People need to get a grip, little billy will not be traumatized by seeing a girl in a bikini.

sumner_son said on November 22, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Always wondered what these places do when a male barista fills out an application for employment? If they are denied, that seems like a pretty good case for sex or gender discrimination. After all, even Hooters has male employees. There are plenty of women who also buy coffee during the day. I also wonder if there are any females who lay out in that park during the summer to catch a tan? Anyone have any photos? What about any other public location in Bellevue where there are bikinis present? Certainly not any of the lakes in the area. OMG! If so, that's another nail in the coffin against the "morality police".

digitlsubversion said on November 22, 2009 at 7:50 PM

Yeah, this is pretty ridiculous. If you don't like it, you don't have to shop there. If we're drawing the line at bikinis, then we need to outlaw bikinis at Alki Beach, another equally family oriented area. And we also need to outlaw bikini car washes, especially the ones with under age girls. I would argue that the latter case is even worse than bikini clad baristas. If you outlaw one, you have to outlaw the others. And since the beach and bikini car washes are perfectly legal, why are bikini coffee stands any different?

said on November 22, 2009 at 8:07 PM

To me (a mother of 3 who drives by this coffee shop every day on the way to and from the school bus) the point is that everyone around can see women's bodies being used to sell a product. With the large window and revealing picture on the sign, there is no way for my children to not see this as we drive by. At the pool or beach, they see many people in bathing suits...for the purpose of going in the water, not to sell something. Fine, I don't agree with it, I won't go there to buy coffee, but with such a large window and sign, how is possble for my children to avoid seeing it. It is not the clothing that is being worn (or not worn) that is the problem to me. As pointed out by others this can be seen at the pool. The problem is the USE of women bodies to sell a product.

libretarian said on November 22, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Then this is an excellent opportunity to teach your kids that you believe that is not right. But, remember there are those that do not agree with your beliefs and would just as soon cut your head off for it. So what do we do if they come to power here? Because they too will say "there ought to be a law"

yogibear said on November 22, 2009 at 8:24 PM

I would not be a very happy parent if my daughter (no matter what her age) did this for a living.

momma123 said on November 22, 2009 at 8:33 PM

I agree with...if you don't like it, don't stop or buy. I wouldn't dare work with scalding milk in my underwear! So maybe these women are "brave"???? They are willing to wear practically nothing and work in such conditions...they should win a medal... This is America, we have the right to free speech so if these women have self esteem issues and think showing themselves to earn a tip is the way to go...that's their right! I am just not stopping for their coffee -- and I am sure instilling a sense of self worth in my children!

anonymoususer said on November 22, 2009 at 8:43 PM

washington state - the trash pit of the u.s. No wonder boeing left for somewhere more decent.

digitlsubversion said on November 22, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Sure they're using their bodies to sell a product, but how is this any worse than Cosmo, or Maxim magazine, or any other sort of advertisement? If you chase out the bikini baristas, you also have to tear down the Giorgio Armani and Ambercrombie & Fitch billboards everywhere too. And let's not forget all the advertisements on TV either. Where do you stop? Taliban anyone? If there isn't any nudity according to the letter of the law, then this is simply complaining for the sake of it. Let's make sure they follow all the applicable laws, but leave this alone otherwise.

dakotanative said on November 22, 2009 at 8:51 PM

Nioce try, but a very large percentage of the women at the beach never even touch the water. They are there for the sun so they can sell their bodies. Might be to look better as a doctor's secretary or a waitress at the local Denny's. We drive past the local Bikini Bottom Espresso, and I don't think the kids have ever even noticed that it is anything other than another coffee stand. Oh, maybe that is because we don't care and don't make a scene infront of the kids. If people were walking down the street naked, the kids would only take notice if we had corrupted their minds about the actions of others.

anonymoususer said on November 22, 2009 at 8:56 PM

The beach they are not using their bodies to sell anything. Typical washingtonians who cannot tell the difference between wearing bathing suits to get some sun and stripping to sell a product. Those who do not want this in the neighborhood - boycott the chevron station and contact chevron about it telling them you will be boycotting that station as long as the strippers are there. Last week all 50 of my employees received layoff notices. I will be relocating my business to somewhere that has traditional family values whether it's to another state or another country. Good luck washington state, you will not survive your immorality very long.

anonymoususer said on November 22, 2009 at 9:00 PM

Typical immoral thinking - it's on TV so we need to allow it everywhere. Maybe mcdonalsd should become bikini burgers since there are few moral people left who sees how wrong it is.

libretarian said on November 22, 2009 at 9:09 PM

That's what makes this country awesome. We can have morals, if we so choose. But we can NOT impose our morals on others. When analog T.V. died, my T.V. died too, because there is nothing on I want to watch anymore. I have Netflix & can zoom right past anything I don't want to see. Get that? Zoom right passed it. Don't look! Wow, that is freak'n amazing!!

seattlelovemonge said on November 22, 2009 at 9:17 PM

ok...some poeple need to be honest here...and stop comparing what is worn on the beach/pool.. as opposed to these coffee shops....these girls are not wearing normal bikini's...these girls are wearing stripper clothes....slivers of clothes barely covering private area's.....you see nipples, pubic hair or cameltoe...so come on!!! be real.....these shops should be zoned for what they are "Adult Coffee Shops".....just like Deja Vu,Ricks, Sugars or any other strip club...I have no issue with the first amendment and the rights of the person promoting it...but to have these shops near schools, parks, or anywhere children is present is creating a health and saftey issue...it will take some god aweful sex crime to happen to make city council members to stop this...and that will be sad for the potential victim...

teufel said on November 22, 2009 at 10:19 PM

I can believe how you whiners describe you and your children’s experience driving passed these bikini coffee shops. As a driver you should be paying attention to your diving and come on, your kids are probably oblivious to the coffee shop. Unless you are pointing it out to them by whining. And for you boycotting police, what’s next hang out in front of lingerie shops or department stores. To see who is buying lingerie? Who are the real sick monkeys?

anonymoususer said on November 22, 2009 at 10:39 PM

This country is "great" because it is filled with deviants??? When morality was common, it was safe to go for a walk at night or let your kids play in your yard without having to watch out for sexual predators. It was also safe to shop at southcenter without fear of being shot by a gang member or mugged in the parking lot. Those who believe morality has no place in society are those we must fear. When morality dies, so does society. With no morality, there is anarchy. Immorality is why my business is relocating elsewhere. 50 employees lost their jobs - and the businesses my business dealt with will also suffer. Glad you think immorality is more important than having that money in the local economy. You can have anarchy and bikini burgers if you want - but as businesses pack up and move elsewhere, do not complain you cannot find a good job.

It amazes me that the very same people who whine about this and call it immoral and don’t want their kids to see this have no issues telling those very same kids that it’s ok for man to love another man or a woman to love another woman. Yes little Tim I know your friend has 2 dads and no mother, that’s ok and perfectly normal.

this coffee stand should be shut down. infact, this chain and all the rest should be as well... there has never been a problem with any other "nudy" espresso stand locations but "knotty bodies." your location is the first place that should come across your mind! and where is the owner during all these interviews? he is to chicken to show his face on TV because he knows he is a dirt ball! i wonder if the owners have kids? that would be pretty sick and unthoughtful of them! and alittle advice if you are reading this...... the girl on the news interview. autumn? the barsita. your going to help shut the place down by not bringing any business. i couldnt imagine looking at you in a bikini making my coffee. normally they hire skinny girls. that bring in business.... GOOD LUCK

cry_wolf said on November 23, 2009 at 12:27 AM

Get over it Bellevue. And to the mother of 3? Doubtful your kids can make the connection that you do that cause your "objections" to this. You might as well boycott whatever makeup line you use. And DOVE soap. Since they are all using womens bodies to "sell us things." What I'd be more worried about -- if you wanna open up this bag of worms -- are the Disney films you probably let (with all due respect) your little runts watch that are jam packed with issues more important than a coffee shop at a gas station in suburbia with a woman in a bikini sitting behind the window that need to be addressed.

"Last week all 50 of my employees received layoff notices. I will be relocating...somewhere that has traditional family values whether it's to another state or another country." - anonymoususer So basically 50 families had their lives upended because you think a woman serving coffee in her underwear is so great a violation of "traditional family values". What happened to the commitment of a business owner to the workers to whom he provides a living? I'm sure in your head, if this really happened, you're a hero for sacrificing your business to protect "traditional family values". Personally I think traditional family values are about doing my job, providing for family and friends, trying to be a good person, and participating in the community. This business is just another business with a gimmick. Standing around making coffee all day isn't an easy job. So buy a large coffee, leave a generous tip, and close your eyes while doing it.

I have been bartending for almost 10 years now. I of all people, being a woman, know that sex sells. I even did my own little experiment, wearing low cut tops, vs. regular shape collars. Know what? Same tips. The service is in the smile, people. The aging population makes up for the largest amount of consumers we deal with. The young crowd is what we want to draw in, but hey, they don't have the money cause they don't have the jobs..... Vicious cycle I know. I do not agree with a woman selling herself for tips, simply because I got sick of guys drooling over my cleavage but leaving the same two dollars they left when I dressed in a t-shirt and jeans. If you have consistent service, you have consistent tips. Plain and simple. Boobies make people smile, but so does a bad joke.

fall2009seattle said on November 23, 2009 at 2:34 AM

This is just common sense to me. You have a grocery store, there is food in it. You have things that are not of family integrity, they should be placed in an area that is not where there is a school. I guess it just gets down to common sense. Sure, there are two sides or more to every story, but I think honestly (and I live in Woodinville), that we really need to think about the people that work near there and put their hard earned money in their homes and make it so that most everyone loves where they work and live. If you want to have one of those, have it where there is not as much traffic. I know that states that they aren't wanted, but really, if you look at the news and all of the uproar these have caused, they aren't. Common sense.

Sure the owner has a right to open a business. Any business owner worth a grain of salt would have taken the neighborhood into account when opening a business. Obviously, this character is counting on the controversy to get a load of free advertising...and got it. It is near a park. Children go by there every day to school. Women buy gas at that gas station--and have always felt safe doing so (I am one of them)--since the station owners are very nice people, and have always run a great business. This whole situation bothers me because the picture on the sign is topless...backs or not, admit it...it's topless. This would indicate the baristas are topless. It also indicates they are selling sex, not coffee. The previous coffee stand failed because, let's admit it, the coffee wasn't good--at least, every time I bought there the milk was soured. But let's face it, the sign is inappropriate to the neighborhood. At least put a bikini top on the sign.

I don't get the people in King County. Always voting for SOCIALIST values. Same sex marriage is alright ,but a female in a bikini n oway .Same voting pattern in elected folks. Vote for the tax and sapend with no consideration of long term effect, but expect your own household and small business to be conservative. Glad I don't live in King County, just have to put up with their logic in government, hopefully not for long.

harlygold1965 said on November 23, 2009 at 6:36 AM

It is not a strip club! get off the day care and park deal. It is a money making deal, and if it should not have been put there , then the city of Bellevue would have given them the permits to open. You freaks go to church, then turn around and back stab your family and friends. You work for the state and goverment and then turn around and rape woman and kids. Get off your high horse and come back down to earth. Those who are complaining are not better then the guy that opened the place up.

dasindog said on November 23, 2009 at 7:29 AM

Bikini Barista's is like Canadian change, you don't know how you got it, and you can't get rid of it. Seems like if establishments like this were 'that bad' than they would go out of business quickly, but they don't, they thrive. While I think there should be some personal community responsibility on the owners part, I don't see the big deal. In contrast, I was walking with my 7 year old son up 1st Ave in seattle after a Hawks game and we walked past an adult toy store, who had adult toys in the window case, how do you explain that when he asked, "Dad, what are those?" The sad thing is that no one cares until it's in your neighborhood.

Amazing how morality can be twisted for the benefit of a hypocritical few....................... It is my hope the place goes completely nude - cause you can bet they would have someone serving who SHOULD NOT have taken her clothes off - and then all will be well again...........................until another East Side liberal drives by only to get disgusted that she after all is not a natural blone....

kingtermite said on November 23, 2009 at 8:56 AM

God its annoying to see all these "moral police". I live about 3 blocks from that new coffee shop and I have NO issue with it. This is still THE LAND OF THE FREE isn't it? Go home and cry in your bibles you "moral police".

anonymoususer said on November 23, 2009 at 9:44 AM

The deviants need to stop pushing their immorality on the rest of us. Next thing they will want strip clubs to have windows and be placed along the highways. The stripper baristas are wearing stripper bikinis as already mentioned. I have never seen that type of bikini at the beach. They are sex workers and need to be regulated as such - which means no public view from the road. They need to put up a wall between the stripper stands and the public roads. They will still have their business and the rest of us will not be forced to see their deviant behavior. The sick deviants think they can push their immorality on the rest of us - and it is a sign of the decline of society and is why businesses are leaving the area.

fed_up said on November 23, 2009 at 9:51 AM

First off, stop equating gay relationships with bikini stands. That makes absolutely zero sense. I am a lesbian and have been in a committed, monogamous relationship for over 4 years and have found the person that I am going to spend the rest of my life with - which is better than a lot of straight people. My life is not immoral, just because your religion says so. He who has not sinned... Second, as previously stated above, if you are not happy with the stand - don't go to it. Bikini stands are just day jobs for strippers and they gotta make that paper too. If you are truly up in arms about it - have a civil protest at the Chevron. Picket out front and encourage patrons not to get gas there and perhaps that will send the message that the community is serious about not having these coffee stands around. But bringing your concerns to the City Coucil and whining to them when they permitted the business to open - is just stupid and a waste of time. Be smarter than that.

I never said that I had to agree with what you said but it is exciting that people can speak their minds and that be Federally protected. I would just stay away from the bikini stands - this bikini stand has received so much free advertising from King 5 and the more they talk about it - the owner is hearing cash *CHA-CHING* in his mind every time someone videotapes his barista stand. Such a shame.

Don't smoke here, dont sit too close to the exotic dancer, Do not sell malt liquor here. I don't see how this effects any of you. You just dont want this business in your neighborhood. Are youafraid that your housing market will be effected? Maybe you will be inundated by a rash of caffeine addicted perverts who will be lurking throughout your neighborhood. Maybe your son will see some girl in a bikini. Maybe your husband will drive by and see a younger woman with perkier tatas then yours and he likes it/them. pubcrawler said on November 23, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Yikes folks, what has happened to just having some fun? Baristas wearing bikinis sells coffee and nothing could be more American than that. In my hometown one can always tell which stand has the best looking baristas by the number of pick-up trucks with NRA stickers in the back window in que for a Mocha. I'm with everybody else - relax and enjoy it. I was reading a story comment one time from some woman in Australia thanking God that her country got the convicts and we got the puritans. Amen sister. What do those girls have to do to get some attention in this town? Just goes to show that a good product isn't enough; you need a good name. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to things like this, but I agree that you can use this as an example to your children instead of shielding them from it. No need to freak out about it. If someone does something inappropriate when I have my kids with me, I just turn to my kids and we talk about it. I don't make the other person out to be a bad guy either, because I don't want my kids to be judgmental. I just want them to make good choices. We don't have to agree with other people's choices, but we have to remember we aren't superior to anyone....

dazigzagman said on November 23, 2009 at 6:02 PM

its nice to see people more worried about this than the meth lab down the street. The lines to bikini stands would be alot shorter if the women concerned about these places paid a little more attention to thier husbands, and the parents who worry about their kids seeing this would actually explain something to their kids instead of dodging the subject and lying to them and sitting them infront of the tv when they get home. Me and my old lady snicker when we drive by these places, and our young child is well aware of the concept (youd be suprised of what children can comprehend these days, which you would know if you paid a little more attention to them) YOU VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLAR!!!

yeah - don't teach your kids to judge the gang members, arsonists, murderers - just gently explain to them that is other peoples choice and why you won't participate in it. The problem is, people do not judge righteously (nor do they teach their kids to judge righteously) and that allows crime (including meth labs) to increase. If you are going to allow strippers in the neighborhoods, then why judge the meth manufacturer ??? Don't they have the right to participate in their immoral activity too?

I have to agree with a bunch of the comments on this. My first reaction was oh no here we go again, why are people so uptight. Seriously. There are so many other real issues to put our energies towards vs a bunch of people who want to make a living wearing Florida wear in the middle winter. Not my choice. Ha! I'm frankly more worried about the people who are up in arms about the espresso stand and the judgement we are teaching our kids to be so uptight.

@anonymoususer.... One small thing you’re missing, all those things you list are ummmmmm……… ILLEGAL.... Last time I checked wearing a bikini was not!

There's nothing here that isn't on display at the beach or the pool. I get that some people are offended. But people don't have a right to walk through life without being offended. There will invariably be things out in the world that each of us don't agree with. People who are offended can use this as a teachable moment for their children where they can explain to them why their family does not frequent this sort of establishment. I live in this neighborhood and personally don't mind this place. I'll probably get coffee there sometime and could care less what the baristas wear as long as the coffee is good. A lot is written about it being near a park but in reality there is a really thick hedge between the park and the stand. Children playing at the park can not see this place. But like I said, even if they did see it, there is nothing they would not see at a beach or the pool.

Watched Kong6/News tonight. It is sort of ironic that more people show up at a City Council meeting for a small little neighborhood coffee stand, than for other pretty important issues (healthcare, education, public safety, international politics, etc). Somewhere along the line, the prioritires of "Average" Americans got pretty screwed up. If these guys/girls get kicked out of Bellevue, we have some great spots in Kirkland and we will welcome you with open arms - and wallets! Seing a naked body - on top of that beatiful young ones - should not really create an uproar. Heck, are kids these days not allowed to see their parents naked? Have we fallen that deep and so far away so we are afraid to show ourselves in the nude - the way we were created "equally".

@americannight - I'm sorry, but beachwear belongs at the beach, a pool, a backyard or a cruise ship. Simply put, it's for hot weather. I can't imagine going to the office and seeing the company head wearing a Speedo at a board meeting. The line has to be drawn somewhere. Hey, I'm not crazy about folks wearing pajamas to work and school (I've worked places and high schools where that's been done), but I'll take pj's over bikinis any day. I was wondering if the employees were planning on wearing fur bikinis to stay warm in the wintertime when they have to open that window. What did they plan to do if someone grabbed them inappropriately? I'm glad they're gonna be shut down. The only people beefing at the rest of us who think this business is insane are those who won't see the jugs to go with their java. This is offensive to women and reduces them to nothing more than sex objects. The moral majority wins. Get over it!

Anamouser, Why should the Chevron station be penalized for something they have nothing to do with. And is Washington state is such a trash pit as you call it, then freaking move. You kinda went off the deep end here. Knotty Bodies should NOT be where it is. I live in Seattle, but I know exactly where it is located. My brother lives in that area. Very close. You just sound so angry, hateful and self rightous. Many of us agree that that type of espresso stand is just wrong, but we are not so volatile. Any girl who would work at a place like that I feel sorry for. When a little 5 year old boy asks his mom why a girl is selling coffee in her underwear, the place has to go. So, god has interviened. The joint has been closed down for code violations. Now, those of you in the area just to you best to keep it closed for good.

People... THIS IS NOT ABOUT JUST KIDS! Man... Most of you have no clue. If you owned your home in this neighborhood as I do, you might ask yourself... "I wonder what could go wrong with this." Answer: Everett allowed some seedy businesses like these and soon found out that the people surrounding them are involved in prostitution and other serious crimes. Here is what has happened just in the last two months... 1. Five prostitute baristas got caught trading sex for cash and charged by Everett Police. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/24/grab-n-go-bikini-baristas_n_298700.html http://gawker.com/5367734/barista-prostitution-sting-stuns-washington-state-espresso-purists 2. Gunman murders a guy in the drive through of "Cowgirls Espresso stand." Reason for the murder? The two men were fighting over an erotic barista girl. Nice. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2009866615_everettslaying15m.html You think this is about innocent, sexy waitressing? Think again.

THIS ISN'T ABOUT MORALS. I see nothing wrong with full frontal nudity in the right time in place (festivals? Sure!) However, I must confess that I was once a bikini/lingerie barista at a stand in the bothell area.I am an extremely open minded person with a pretty decent moral compass. I do not partake in the drug use, partying and all out promiscuity that many people my age do. However, I must say that bikini stands are NOT a good idea for safety reasons. Many people that work in the stands are drug users or attract drug dealers who believe they can turn bikini baristas into their latest clientelle. Furthermore, I have been sexually harrassed, assaulted and flashed while "working." I have never worn pasties or been particularly "risque." However, working in a box in lingerie is going to attract some very perverse people. I have encounted customers who I believe may be pedophiles, and specifically go to bikini stands because they exploit the youngest girls possible to work in the stand

Oh and as a P.S. you definitely WILL see things here you wouldn't see at a pool or a beach. Many of the girls I have worked with in the past will result to masturbating in front of customers, giving hand jobs, or exposing themselves for the sake of earning tips. This stand may start out as something fairly innocent, but as more employees join the team, the likelihood rises that atleast one worker will result to illegally exposing themselves to earn an extra buck.
