Former KING TV anchor shares breast cancer battle for first time

07:05 PM PDT on Wednesday, September 19, 2007

By LORI MATSUKAWA / KING 5 News

SEATTLE - "My name is Hattie Kauffman and I am a breast cancer survivor!"

She says it with joy and some relief.  Since her diagnosis in 2001, Hattie Kauffman had told no one outside family and one workplace friend about her breast cancer, lumpectomy and radiation.

Kauffman worked as a reporter, then weekend anchor at KING TV from 1981 to 1987. The Seattle native has been a national correspondent for CBS News for the last 17 years.

She says the first surgery wasn't the end of it. Kauffman took a test and discovered she had the BRCA1 gene. It meant she had an 85 percent chance of getting breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer.

She had her ovaries removed and then made the decision to get a double mastectomy, to reduce her chances of recurring breast cancer.

"I found I love life. I want to live," says Kauffman.
