'Fault in Our Stars' couple anxious to reunite before wife's death

The real-life story of the couple is often compared to the novel and movie "The Fault in Our Stars"

It’s an understatement to say that Dalton and Katie Prager have had more health struggles and misfortune than most. For Katie, the struggle is about to come to an end.

“The transplant didn’t work out for me,” said Katie Prager from her Kentucky hospital, “and it’s hard but you’ve got to take the cards you were dealt with and just move forward.”

A year ago, when NewsChannel 5 profiled the Pragers, they were already an international story. Their real-life story was often compared to the novel and movie “The Fault In Our Stars” about two teenage cancer patients who fell in love.

Eight years ago Katie sent a Facebook message to her future husband because they both were living with the lung disease cystic fibrosis. They fell in love and married, each hoping for a life-saving lung transplant. Both received new lungs, but Katie needs a second transplant that isn’t going to happen.

“Last week the doctors basically told me that there was nothing more they could do,” said Katie.

Meanwhile, Katie’s husband Dalton of St. Charles County, is hospitalized in St. Louis getting treatment for lymphoma, waiting to get well enough to travel to Kentucky to see his wife, perhaps for the last time.

“Even if it's just for a few hours,” said Katie. “One last time to kiss or hug, just be together.”

Insurance won’t cover the cost of Dalton’s flight to see his dying wife, but in a matter of hours Tuesday, friends and strangers donated over $9200 dollars via GoFundMe.

“I just want to say thank you," said Katie. “The amount of support and love that everybody has given us is amazing. I can never thank everybody enough for everything they've done.”

Katie Prager conducted a Skype interview from Kentucky while receiving dialysis treatment. She also has cancer. Interviews with MTV, CNN, and the London Mail have spread the couple’s story around the world.

“I actually got a tweet last night from James Woods on Twitter,” said Katie, who said she’s now a new fan of the veteran actor. “People all around the world say ‘You're my inspiration, you're my hero.' I don't feel like I'm an inspiration or a hero. I haven't done anything. The only thing I've done is fight, which any person would do in this situation.”
