It's not unusual for omas and opas to break out in song during their weekly kaffeklatches at Lakewood's German Pastry and Coffee Shop. Over streudel and java, they gather to talk about children, grandchildren and birthdays all in the native tongue.
"English is difficult," says Rita Price. "We say our R's with the front RRRRRRRR so when we check into another language we break our tongues".
"Lakewood has a lot of Germans living here along with the Steilcoom and DuPont areas," says Hess Bakery owner Joni DeGrande.
They followed their husbands back to these communities near military bases...but they never completely left Germany behind. For a taste of home Rita and other German emigrants shop at Hess Bakery and Deli. It's been around for more than 40 years.
"All of our employees are German, " says Joni. "We carry an assortment of magazines, cards, toiletry items. All of our products are imported from Germany."
Customers come for the fresh deli items and for the baked goods--especially those giant soft pretzels.
