Who would win in a fight? Superman vs. Shazam? Batman vs. Nightwing? Joker vs. Harley Quinn? The Flash vs. Bane? Injustice: Gods Among Us lets you attempt to answer those burning fight questions you've always had. Jump into the phone booth and slip into your spandex trousers, its fight time.
In an alternate universe the Joker has tricked Superman into killing Lois Lane. In a fit of rage, Superman murders The Joker and establishes himself as ruler of planet Earth. Some heroes join his side in the Regime, while others join Batman in the Insurgency. The Insurgency heroes discover the Justice League's universe where the Joker's plan had failed. In an attempt to defeat Superman's Regime the Insurgency teleports over some of the Justice League and accidently the Joker too, but this does not go completely unnoticed. Before anything can be established, the Regime forces show up to arrest the wanted heroes. In the resulting chaos the Justice League Batman gets captured and the Joker escapes into the city.
From here the story splits to follow small teams of Insurgency/Justice League heroes as they gather items and recruit forces to help rescue Batman and fight against the dictator Superman. It is established early on that in the alternate universe, a pill has been developed that allows normal humans like Green Arrow and the Joker to be able to go toe to toe with someone as powerful as Superman. Injustice: Gods Among Us' story culminates with Dictator Superman vs. Justice League Superman.
Controls and Gameplay
The controls for Injustice: Gods Among Us are very customizable. You have your choice, gamepad or fight stick; you can even customize the button layout to whatever is comfortable to you. I invited a couple fight game friends of mine over to play and the first thing they did was change the button layout.
The gameplay is that of a fighting game taken to superhero levels. You can use certain objects in each environment to help defeat your opponent such as cars or missiles. You can even knock an opponent into a different area with the right punch at the right time.
Graphics and Audio
Graphically developer NetherRealm Studios went for a realistic look for Injustice: Gods Among Us, much like their marquee title Mortal Kombat. There is a lot of attention to details. Each hero and villain's costume is made to look like something that would be actually be used and purposeful instead of just a pair tights with their underwear on the outside. This level of detail extends into the environments also, some of which have cameos from other heroes and villains.
While it was hoped certain voice actors would return for signature characters, (*cough*mark-hamill-as-joker*chough*) that didn't happen. But the voice actors they do have rocked in their roles. Each sounded as a natural fit.
NetherRealms wanted to experiment a bit within the fight genre of games with Injustice: Gods Among Us. They decided that though loosely based on the framework of Mortal Kombat, Injustice would have its own feel that would set it apart. Tweaks to the controls included the removal of Mortal Kombat's traditional "block" button. The result gives Injustice: Gods Among Us a big battle feel, especially with the interactive environments. It’s like the big fights came straight off the pages of comic books. This is exactly what a fighting game like this should be, big, bold, and a touch showy.
There are some minor faults; cut scenes don't quite flow graphically into the actual fights. Also I did spot one plot hole in the story, but it doesn't really take away much from the fun.
Injustice: Gods Among Us Is a solid fighter game that you can have a lot of fun with fighting against your friends. Both of my fight game experts give it high marks. I personally give it a 4.75 out of 5.
Injustice: Gods Among Us is rated “T” for Teen for Blood, Language, Suggestive Themes, and Violence by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB).
