Honda and Toyota are surpassing Ford in auto sales in the U.S., thanks to the rise in gas prices.

The Toyota Prius gets 48 mpg city, 45 mpg highway.
According to Car and Driver magazine, for the past 17 years, no vehicle has outsold the Ford F-150, but in May of this year, Honda sold more Civics and Accords and Toyota sold more Corollas and Camrys.
The magazine says industry heads believe the higher gas prices are permanent, not just a temporary shift or spike and companies have been restructuring operations because of that. GM has stopped production of trucks and SUVs at four U.S. plants and laid off thousands of workers.
The company has also given the go-ahead to the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid for a 2010 release, and is considering selling off the Hummer brand.
