NAMPA, Idaho - A worker at the Amalgamated Sugar plant in Nampa died Friday after falling into a piece of machinery.
The accident happened when the worker was performing tasks near an auger and fell in.The auger moves the sugar from one part of the plant to another.
Fire crews were on the scene, trying to retrieve the worker's body. A platform truck was being brought in from the Meridian Fire Department to help aid in removing the body. The Canyon County Coroner is also on scene.
Investigators are on the scene trying to determine exactly what happened. Nampa Fire Department Deputy Chief Doug Strosnider said the area where the death occurred is very remote from the rest of the plant and is high up off the ground.
"Our hands are tied because there is an investigation going on, and we can't remove him yet," Strosnider said. "We have our work cut out for us up there."
"It appeared the opening into this auger area is 20 inches by 20 inches. They are doing cleaning and all sorts of work up there," he said. "That area is very tight."
It is not known how old the person is or how long they have worked at the factory.
"This is a member of our community and it's very hard," Strosnider said.
