CARNATION, Wash. - The Ivan family of Carnation are taking the boring out of board game. They are the creators of "Flibbix," a build-it-yourself board game where you create the playing area. You can even change it mid-game and make your own rules.
"It completely changes how the game goes,' said Jason Ivan.
Ivan's background is in video games, but he came up with Flibbix while actually constructing a not-so traditional game for his family to play.
"And our kids got really excited about what I was working on and decided they wanted to help make the game, but I was working with power tools and didn't want them to lose a hand or something," he said.
So the kids tried their hand at creating some of the rules, which are made to be broken.

Their prototype constructed, the family needed a test market, and found one at the kids' schools. That "make your own rules" thing was a hit.
Flibbix has won numerous awards from parent's magazines and the like, and just this week was named one of this year's top 10 holiday games by The Washington Post and is now available on Amazon.com.
But can it compete with the Wiis and xBoxes of the world? Twelve-year-old Addison thinks so.
"You're having action with your family and friends or relatives and you get to run around and say 'you're a dork!" he said.
Flibbix is recommended for ages 7 and up, but it is appropriate for even younger children.
